Skylanders Voodood

Just to sidetrack a little. I been playing this video game Skylanders with my son since his birthday. It a simple kids hack and slash game with characters levels and such. It’s unique feature is where the characters are toy figures where you can place them on a portal (wireless) and the character appears in the game with you controlling it. Its pretty fun with all sort of characters, powers and leveling ups. See the Skylanders site.

Now, as usual, most toy figures are just usually mass painted in a single base colour tone with no shading and details. Some of the figures has a little texture in them, I thought maybe I should give one of these little Skylanders a make over, haha.

I been playing this character called Voodood with my son, so I thought I shall give him a make over and have him painted to that he goes into battle with honor and style. Besides, the animated character in the game looks better than the toy, haha. So here goes, this is my Skylanders Voodood…

So much for the distraction, now back to my Dark Eldar Wyches, Sedition war and another diorama… SO many things to paint… oh no… Cheers!

Kingdom Death new miniatures ordered!

kingdom death new releaseJust last week, when I got Kingdom Death newsletter in my email, I was really excited about it. I knew it must be some new release for the coming festive period. And, upon clicking my mail, gosh, I was lost for words for the new released miniatures, simply awesome! Check out at Kingdom Death!

As I am collecting more to human natures type of miniatures figures, the male and female survivors caught my attention, along with the pin-up saviour. The Flower Knight and the Forge Priest were tempting me too. I was thinking which ones to get or should I get all 5 new miniatures. Just feeling flicker minded, I thought maybe I decide the next day which ones to order as I knew Kingdom Death resin release are always limited runs only.

Guess what on the next day…., just when I decided I wanted the awesome Flower Knight as well, it was sold out, sold out in just one night…. Oh nooo… The survivor female is running out, followed by the rest too… Quickly, I finally ordered the survivors and the saviour pin-up. Looking forward to getting them soon. Then just as I look at the Forge Priest, he looks good too… oh no… Cheers!

I show you how to paint rust effect

In my earlier post, my Ogre Maneater Pirate was holding an old rusty anchor. I painted the anchor with a rust effect. Thought I show you how I manage to paint the rust effect.

For the anchor, it is painted with a base of Citadel Scorched Brown, after the usual base coat black. I am using a Games Workshop stippling brush to work on the effect from here. You don’t to use a GW stippling brush, but any suitable size old brush that are stiff bristles could do the job as well.

Start off with Citadel Beastial Brown with the stippling brush in a up down poking motion. Once dried, I mixed Citadel Beastial Brown with Sunburst Yellow, and followed with the stippling brush action. Finally, last round of stippling action is done with a mix of Citadel Sunburst Yellow and Blood Red. And there you have it, a rust effect with a simple stippling action. You can add more effect with dry brush of Citadel Bolt Gunmetal at the edges to create worn off rust effect revealing the metal. Cheers!

Ogre Maneater Pirate

“Treasure… more treasure!”

My pirate mood finally got my Orge Maneater Pirate all painted up already. After much research at pirates references and such, the colour of the clothes are usually of the brown colour family shades. So, my Ogre Maneater Pirate is much based around the colours of Citadel Snakebite Leather, Beastial Brown and Scorched Brown.

I imagined him dragging some looted some old lost treasures from some old wreck onto the shallow shores, and was shouting in joy with the rusting anchor of the wreck in one hand. The colour of the sand, were based more like the shallow beach sand colour. There are 2 puddles of water beside the Ogre which makes as if he is in the shallow sands of the water. The clear water effect is created with some gel and Tamiya clear acrylic paint.

With the Pirate mood, I am really considering to subscribe to GW White Dwarf and getting the Pirate White Dwarf… Hmm… more treasure, more X on the map… haha… cheers!

More Wizards, more spells

While running through my stuff and piles, I realized actually I do have enough wizards to paint to represent a wizard for each of the Eight Lores of Magic.

For my Empire, I already have a Lore of Fire Wizard, and a white Wizard to represent Lore of the light. There’s 2 Necromancers in my Vampire count army, one of the Necromancer can represent the Lore of Death.

old wizards sprue

I found some old Wizards sprue that actually I can paint up to represent the rest of the Lores of Magic. The Battle Wizards box set from the Empire miniatures would have much better details.

The old Wizards sculpt and cast were more flat and not much details. I was thinking since they do not have much physical details, I thought maybe during the painting stage, the robes could be painted with more details like patterns, symbols design and such. The acrane stuff they are holding can be painted with more details to elaborate the powers they are holding. Seems like a good idea, will be one of my projects to start off later on. Meantime, I am just finishing my Ogres Maneater, with the Pirate mood in mind… Cheers

Raise my Undead! Vampire Count Necromancer

Few weeks back, I managed to get my Vampire Count Necromancer all done up at the last hour and got it submitted in time for The Rotten Harvest 2011 contest. The results for The Rotten Harvest contest – Witches and Warlock category is out now and I got a place in the 2nd position. Check out the other entries gallery here. Thank you everyone for voting and Wyrd for the great contest!

The Witches and Warlock category is for all miniatures Spellcasters from fantasy to sci-fi. At first, I thought of getting the freebooters miniature for this category, but after much rumbling through my shelves, I realized that my Vampire Count Necromancer fits the category completely. As the pose for the Necromancer sculpt is like as if he is casting a spell of sort, I thought he should be casting the Innvocation of Nekek spell, raising an undead skeleton warrior.

With the bitz and extras from the Vampire Count skeleton warrior sprue, I managed to convert half a skeleton warrior raising from a pool of skulls and bone. The stone slab and pool of skulls are from Games Workshop Citadel Hero Basing Kit which I got a while back. The arm for the skeleton I had to cut and re-oriented the wrist and the sword arm wrist to a pose as if the skeleton is pushing itself up from the pile of skulls.

The colour choice for the Necromancer I followed the theme and colour feel for my Vampire Count army. Guess after much research, Necromancer are usually in a darker tone of robes and cloak. Anyway, as my Necromancer is casting the spell from a dusty pools of skulls ruins… I finished the miniature with a dust of weathering powder, as if he has been around lurking around the dusty skull ruins for skeletons reinforements.

I sure had lot of fun converting and painting this Necromancer, sure adds a new dark energy to my Vampire Count Army. Raise my Undead! Cheers!

The State of My Brushes

Was packing up my painting table the other day, when I reflected at the state of my current painting brushes. I am currently using Games Workshop detail and fine detail brushes for most of my painting.

So far, I must say, the brushes are doing a great job and line works and details with the brushes are great too. Come to think of it, since my last post in Oct 2010 which I mentioned about upgrading to GW brushes, it was like a year passed already. Time flies when you are painting… And the state of these brushes are still good and sharp tipped. I guess it all contributes to taking care of the brushes, after all they are also kolinsky bristles as well. Nowadays usually and faithfully, I would wash my brushes with shampoo after each paint session. I guess the shampoo help to keep the bristles clean and conditioned, as they are real hair after all.

games workshop brushes

Of recent, I been wanting to the try the popular kolinsky sable series 7 brushes from Windsor and Newton. They have 2 types, the normal series 7 range and the series 7 miniature range. The different is in the length of the bristles, where the miniature range having a shorter one. I am tempted to get the 2 types to try out the feel of it.

Meantime, anyone have any experience or comments about using Windsor and Newton series 7 brushes, or difference between series 7 and series 7 miniature? Cheers!

Working on Pirate Ogre Maneater

Past days been trying hard to squeeze time to pick up my brush, but at time tireness just over rule my body and mind. If only I can have the mind body of the Space Marines, where I can go on without sleep for the next few days, painting… haha!

Anyway, I was been working on my Dark Eldar Wyches, when the Ogre distracted me. With the recent release of Dreadfleet, and the recent hype of pirate miniatures, especially I’ve been drooling over Freebooters’ Pirate miniatures range, how can I not get infected with the Pirate bug… haha.

ogre maneater pirate

So, I finally managed to base and got some painting started for my Ogre Maneater Pirate. So far so good, but I’ve been pondering what skin colour for the Ogre, tough choice. Took me a while to dig out my old White Dwarf issues and my Ogre Kingdom army book for some references.

The base I am planning to base as if the Ogre is standing in some shallow waters where he managed to pull his treasure off some ship or so. It will be fun making the water, looking forward to finish the Ogre and get started on the base. Meantime, I will do some experiment to test first as well. Stay tuned… Cheers!

Green Glow and Necrons

If you are a Necron fan, you should not miss this month White Dwarf. It has everything about Necron and its new release miniatures.

On a temptation level, I must say, flipping through the pages of all those robot technology and gauss tech in the White Dwarf, sure make temptation feels at its peak, haha. In my earlier post, looking at those leaked pict already, temptation was already slight. With White Dwarf full pictorial, wow. The thoughts of collecting did occur, and its so strong….. arrggghh…. but in the end I managed to brush those addictive thoughts aways and remain in pain, haha. Probably I will get the Codex for some reading pleasures.

On them miniatures range, the new sculpts looks good. Most of the new range are nicely sculpted and up to date. Guess seeing the real miniatures then I can see how the Necron live up to the new sculpt and details. I still recall my Dark Eldar experiences, seeing the real miniatures, I was drawn into the pain immediately. Will pop by my local stores and have a real look at those minatures next week or so.

And, those green arcylic plastic rod are still around. Looks like the basic Necron warriors is still the same sculpt repackaged and with green rods. I thought GW would be doing away with the green rods, but guess not. The new range though does not seem to have any green rod, but mostly all the parts that are green, are painted green glowing.

So much for greens, will be looking forward to the Codex next week! Cheers!
