Reaper Bones Ma’al Drakar the Dragon Tyrant

Dragon! Had this project from a client who is into Dungeon and Dragon role playing. Client bought a Reaper Bones Ma’al Drakar the Dragon Tyrant box set and requested it to be painted like Dungeon and Dragon’s Tiamat! Definitely a cool project and it was one of the biggest miniatures project I have painted. Painting it on my painting desk workspace was a challenge as Ma’al Drakar the Dragon was a big model (I wouldn’t call it miniature I guess… ha ha).

As the Reaper Bones Ma’al Drakar Dragon was sculpted slightly different from the original Dungeon and Dragon Tiamat design, probably due to copyright reasons, some modification were made on the dragon model. I “transplanted” and exchanged the horns for black and green dragon head (reference to the Tiamat head colour scheme). Adjusted and converted the black dragon head with the sideway curve horns from the green dragon head. Took the black dragon horn and converted it to a normal horn for the green dragon head. On Tiamat blue dragon head design, it has a horn, I sculpted and added a horn for the blue dragon head to have it similar to Tiamat design. Now, it feels like Tiamat!

Painting it was more or less the usual process. Base it and blended with my airbrush, followed by dry brush. Then the tedious steps of outlining and shading the scales. The only exception and challenge of it is, its a large model and having space constraint on my painting table. Once painted, its was really magnificent to look it. I can imagine encountering Tiamat in a game of Dungeon and Dragon, think I will roll for morale test to fail and run… ha ha!

Just a typical guy who has made painting miniatures part of his daily routine life. As long as I have time in my hands, I will paint. Even with few minutes to spare at times, I will still pick up my brushes and paint a little. Nothing beats the satisfaction when you have your miniatures all done and and ready for battle!
